Lower Manhattan Skyline: Battery Park & Financial District

New York City is wonderful for cityscape photography as it is an endless source of urban views including New York's famous skylines. This one was taken from the ferry going from Downtown Manhattan to Staten Island across New York Harbor.

Even if Lower Manhattan skyline has changed over the years, from a distance, it always reminds me of vintage black & white photographs from the 30s and 40s that were taken from boats leaving or arriving at New York harbor. What a view newcomers were greeted with!

The difference in architectural styles between modern high rises and skyscrapers and older buildings dating back to the 19th Century is particularly striking and is a telling reflection of the changes that NYC experienced through time.

On this photo, one of the most noticeable skyscrapers in the Financial District is One World Trade Center. With its spire, it is 1,776 feet tall, a height chosen as a symbolic reference to the year of the United States Declaration of Independence.
