The Ansonia - New York City

The Ansonia is a gem of turn of the century architecture in Manhattan. Today it is an upscale apartment building, but it was initially built in 1899 as a luxury hotel, the very first hotel in New York City to offer air conditioning.

Over the years, it has been home to many famous residents and the building has appeared many times in literature, in films and on television.

On this Black & White photo, patterns of light and shade lead the eye across the facade and an array of architectural ornaments such as mascarons, balustrades and faux-balconies with their wrought-iron railings. They cannot be seen in this photograph, but the Ansonia building also features domed skylights and a Parisian-style mansard roof.
