Bird portrait: close-up of a house sparrow

Bird portrait: close-up of a house sparrow

I was walking down the Hudson River pier when I saw a host of sparrows fighting for a piece of nut on the sidewalk. One of them was especially fierce and started to scare the others away. I lied down on the ground, used a long lens to try and get a lively portrait of the 'winner'.

The little house sparrow stopped for a second, looked up at me and posed for posterity!

New York can be a great place for bird photography. There are many birders always ready to help you identify our little feathery friends. This one is commonly known as a house sparrow but for birdwatchers, it is a passer domesticus.
