Black-Crowned Night Heron

Not far away from the heart of New York City, and perhaps unknown by many, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is heaven if you like birdwatching and bird photography.

On an early summer morning, I was on my way to the West Pond when I saw a Black-Crowned Night Heron fly over me. It landed very close to me. I was lucky enough to have the 600mm already mounted. When those striking red eyes locked on me, I shot this portrait of this beautiful adult night heron.

Black-Crowned Night Herons can also be seen in large open NYC aquatic areas such as Central Park's lakes, or at the Bronx Zoo and Pelham Bay Park.
