Fiery sunset over Chabrières Needles - Aiguilles de Chabrières, Hautes-Alpes, France

It was late December, wintertime in the Southern Alps and the Ecrins National Park.

After many dull days of dark grey clouds bringing nothing but rain and snow, the sky suddenly cleared enough to let out a burst of sunrays. It was just before sunset and only lasted for a couple of minutes. As the Needles of Chabrières were covered in fresh snow and it was dusk, they lit up in a fiery color palette ranging from orange to yellow through dark blue and an amazing pink hue. The forest below the peak was frozen, reflecting the sky's pink color.

And then, in a flash, it was all gone! The sun vanished behind the clouds again for the next two days...

Mountain photography is magical, especially in the winter. You never know what to expect, but nature, if you have the patience, never disappoints.
