Biography

François Roux lives and works in New York City. He is a native of the town of Gap in the French Alps. As a teenager, François found an affinity for ceramics and photography. He explored processes, permutations, and formulae in his basement chemistry laboratory and darkroom, while frightening his mother with the smoky results! Visits to craftsmen in France amplified his curiosity for the technical aspects of creative pursuits; local ceramic artists and winemakers and their respective methods spurred the photographer's interest in process. Computer science was his next passion. Today, his photography continues to reflect his technological interests while exploring the aesthetic world around him. He received his baccalaureate degree from the Lycée Aristide Briand and went on to obtain an advanced degree in computer programming and accounting from the Lycée Dominique Villard. At the age of 21, François Roux founded a software development company, specializing in general accounting and specific software for beverage companies. He was honored in France with a technical award of merit from Decision Micro. He then joined his family’s beverage company, Mathias-Roux, initially as Director of Computer Development in 1989, and subsequently as General Manager and then Chief Executive Officer. He first visited New York in 1991 and immediately felt a strong connection with the city. Frequent visits to New York led him to make Manhattan his home in 1994. François returned to photography in 2001. His work with computers quite naturally led him to digital images. Francois can be frequently found in New York City's Central Park. --KP François is grateful for the encouragement offered by photographers Joe Holmes, Bertrand Bodin, Jeff Schewe, and Jon Ortner.
